Group Project-Short Story
ReplyDeleteMy name is Rowin and my story began in a rainforest in Australia when two zoologists met while attempting to rescue endangered birds. They fell in love and after a whirlwind romance, they were married. I was born a year later in a submarine, deep down in depths of the ocean, just off of the coasts of the Hawaiian Islands. From that moment on nothing could separate me from nature.
Growing up as an only child and constantly travelling with my parents I learned to love exploring the world around me. I spent countless hours taking in every drop of my surroundings, absorbing and learning everything I could about the wildlife, insects, and environment of all the places we visited. My bond with nature and the earth only got stronger as I got older. There was no better feeling than the cool soil pressing against my bare feet, connecting me to the earth beneath me. I was free.
And then when I was fifteen my whole world changed. My father was in a tragic and fatal car accident. The sudden death of my father changed me in ways I never thought possible. Although I appeared to be the same girl on the outside, 5’5” long brown hair, piercing brown eyes, sun-kissed skin, I was not the carefree girl I had been. I was no longer the confident, curious, brave, independent explorer I used to be. I was a prisoner, trapped by my paralyzing fear of death and the unknown.
Shortly after my father’s death my mother and I moved to the mainland. It was the winter of 1840, the coldest winter in years, or at least that what they said. The thick blanket of snow covered absolutely everything. It was white as far as you could see. The streets were empty, the below freezing temperatures making it nearly impossible to venture out. A thick grey cloud of smoke covered the sky from all of the burning fireplaces being used to combat the cold. A lot of people lost their lives that miserable winter. We did not have antibiotics or vaccines to protect us from the illnesses brought on by the cold.
To keep their spirits up and pass time the women would sew, embroider, read and manage the house as best they could. The children were creative in the ways they entertained themselves. Their favorite activity would be spending countless hours writing plays, making costumes and set designs and then performing their plays for anyone who would watch, for a fee of course.
But not me. I spent my days trying to figure out a way to break out of my internal prison. I would not succeed that winter, or the one after. Finally I realized that the only way I would be free from my fears about death and dying would be to take control and face my fears. And so on my 20th birthday I became a soldier. Not just any soldier, I was one of the first soldiers to join a top secret mission. A mission that has never been done before and never talked about after. We went to Mars.
Carrie Ann-Add description of Mars, what is it like, do we go to war with aliens or with other humans fighting for the right to claim Mars as their territory? Need to describe the fight scene, or event that leads to Rowin’s death.
As I lay here, the blood draining from my motionless body, I know now that experiencing death is nothing I expected or feared it to be. The only thoughts that come to me as I lie here are memories. Memories of the beautiful and glistening ocean and how I loved to immerse myself completely in the waters.
Kevin- add description of swimming in the ocean. How the water feels and what she sees and experiences while swimming (She loves water and nature)
It’s as if I’m there right now, the water all around me. I look down at the colorful life beneath me and the vast blue sky above me. The colors are so vivid, so strikingly beautiful and pure that it is difficult to absorb it all. In this moment, all I feel is love, happiness, and freedom. And as I lay here, taking my last breath, I know that I am not afraid. I am free and fear does not exist in me any longer.
Kevin-> The sun shines up in the sky, like a giant spotlight, flawlessly radiates its warmth thoroughly to the surface of the ocean. An edgeless pool with no boundaries, a vast wilderness. In which i could freely express myself and just like liquid filling empty spaces, i could be whatever i want to become. Crashing waves and echoes of squawking seabirds flying across the open blue sky combined, a soothing whisper of nature. The wind blows through the air; the scent of the salty sea which set me a tranquil mind and gives reminder of summer, making me wish it never ended. <- Kevin
ReplyDeleteKarryann:
ReplyDeleteWe went for war, to fight another country to claim Mars as ours. I didn't know why either side wanted this planet so badly. Just moments before we were to begin, I took a look around our surroundings. It was barren, no vegetation or water. As far as I could see there were only pebbles and a few rocky hills spread throughout the planet's dusty surface. Then I looked up towards the sky and could only see an orange haze in the air. There was no scenery here to admire like the ones back home.
When the battle began, everything was so suddenly fast-paced. I was thankful as it didn't give me enough time to think about the people I was going to kill, the bullets I would just barely dodge, or to think about the occasional body I would run past that belonged to someone I recognized.
After running ahead and shooting for who knows how long, the adrenaline wears off and I find myself far away from the actual battlegrounds. The haze is thicker where I ended up, so I can only see one or two feet in front of me. I begin to walk slowly, squinting my eyes in hopes that I'd spot someone I knew and that I haven't crossed into enemy territory. I wonder around like this for what seems like hours. I feel like giving up.
That's when I hear footsteps coming from ahead of me. I become eager and put myself in danger by calling out. I realize my mistake when the first thing to appear out of the haze is a barrel of a gun. I scramble to get my rifle up, but before I can a soldier emerged before me and knocks it out of my hands. My gun slides out my field of view, so I decide to run, but it was not long until I heard a spray of bullets hitting the ground behind me and finally hitting one of my legs. I feel the sharp pain and fall over, cracking the glass of my helmet on the ground. I want to crawl away, but he is already near. Before finally leaving he shoots his gun one more time, firing at my oxygen tank and my back.
Yay! Fantastic, y'all.
